Biodiversity-Friendly Landscapes
This Science Advances article investigates the paradox of biodiversity-friendly landscapes—strategies that expand habitat area and connectivity to support species at the landscape scale. Analyzing 2,050 vegetation surveys across 125 Swiss farmland landscapes, the study shows these measures both suppress and support “global change winners” such as invasive species, heat-tolerant thermophytes, and nutrient-loving nutriophytes.
Locally, richer species communities resist newcomers, reducing their cover and spread. Yet, at the landscape scale, improved habitat connectivity and richness can facilitate the dispersal of these opportunistic species. Overall, the local biodiversity gains—and the resulting resistance—outweigh the risk of helping global change winners spread, supporting a shift from patch-based interventions to coordinated, landscape-scale conservation in farmlands.

Seasons in Flux
This article reframes seasons as dynamic “timescapes” that reveal the profound sociopolitical dimensions of environmental change in the Anthropocene. The authors argue that seasons—long used by societies to organize life around recurring environmental rhythms—are now being reshaped by human-driven disruptions to Earth’s biogeochemical cycles.
They propose a typology of anthropogenic seasonality: emergent seasons (new, human-induced cycles such as Southeast Asia’s “haze season”), extinct seasons (lost seasonal phenomena like vanishing winter sport seasons), arrhythmic seasons (shifts in timing, e.g., earlier springs), and syncopated seasons (changes in intensity, e.g., hotter summers or amplified wildfire seasons).
Seasonality, they argue, is inherently political. It exposes the hegemony of standardized, industrialized time, the erasure of Indigenous and local temporal knowledge, and the discursive power of seasonal narratives to normalize crises or assign blame—as seen in the framing of “haze season” in Southeast Asia and “smoky season” in northern Thailand. Recognizing seasons as sociopolitical constructs opens new avenues for environmental governance, adaptation strategies, and the decolonization of ecological knowledge.

Indigenous Ontologies and Regenerative Finance in Practice
This Journal of Management Studies article explores how Indigenous worldviews can transform both land stewardship and financial practices. Arjaliès and Banerjee examine the Deshkan Ziibi Conservation Impact Bond (DZCIB), a four-year community-based project in Canada co-designed with the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation. DZCIB mobilized private capital for biodiversity restoration while honoring Indigenous relational ontologies that see land as a living relative, not an extractive asset.
The authors develop a “Two-Eyed Seeing” process model—moving through phases of relationship-building, ethical centering, reciprocity, and harmonization—to braid Indigenous and Western knowledges in multi-stakeholder/rightsholder initiatives. This approach illustrates how conservation finance can support Indigenous resurgence, relational accountability, and ecocentric valuation, even as deep tensions with capitalist structures remain. But the authors caution that scaling such initiatives requires confronting entrenched colonial and property-based systems, since true biodiversity repair is inseparable from land justice and Indigenous self-determination.

Bee Physiology as a Key to Climate Resilience
This Nature article identifies heat and desiccation tolerance as decisive traits for bee survival under climate change. Drawing on 16 years of monitoring 665 bee populations in the arid southwestern United States, the study links physiological data—thermal and water-loss thresholds—to population trends and future projections.
The authors find that 71% of bee populations track aridity, with tolerant species increasing and vulnerable species declining. Models project that 46% of species will lose abundance by 2100, while a small subset of drought-adapted taxa will dominate, leading to more homogeneous but not necessarily less abundant bee communities.
This community reordering carries significant pollination risks. Bee diversity—not just total abundance—supports robust plant-pollinator networks, and a shift toward a few drought-tolerant species could reduce ecosystem resilience. The article underscores that conservation strategies must address not only habitat and pesticides but also the physiological stress of heat and desiccation, potentially through microclimate refugia and drought-tolerant floral resources.
